Utterly Shameful

Well, this blog was meant to have a single purpose, but this got me so bloody angry, that it had to find expression somewhere…

Bill Gates, in an album titled “Why I’m Optimistic”, shared this abomination of a lie on Facebook. I have so many issues with it, probably easiest summed up in the words of Mr Disraeli: ” Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics”.

Sure, the graph looks good – something is going down. But whatever it is, it sure as hell isn’t poverty!! A simple estimate (read “number we made up because we have to prove our point”) of numbers of people earning less than $1.25 per day is a COMPLETELY MEANINGLESS measure of “reduced poverty”.

Particularly as the price of food staples have more than doubled over the period covered by the graph; pushing even more people into food poverty than existed in 1990, when earning less than $1.25 per day was probably a significant measure. Retaining that number today, without making a meaningful adjustment for rampant inflation seems ridiculous…

But, when you have a deadline to meet… best to remain optimistic. No matter how badly misplaced that optimism might be… 😦

About Running Elk

My given native name, Running Elk, was bestowed in 2008 as I took my first steps as a fully fledged Medicine Man of the Zuni tradition. A most unlikely candidate for the role, my journey as a healer began some four years prior. The detour onto the shamanic way was most unexpected, yet has been one of the most rewarding challenges to date.

I’m totally with you on this grrrr 😐

No, H.. it really isn’t unbelievable. sadly. 😦

  3. We really need to reduce the planet’s human population, with proper population control measures and education. Then employers will be begging people to work for them (instead of the other way around). And nature could maybe recover (to an extent) and become being natural again!
The winds are getting more and more chaotic and restless; nature is telling us something… and we better damn well listen.

She sure is. My only fear is that we have left action too late to avoid the inevitable suffering… both of the human population, and of the planet and her other children. We need, to start being honest about the situation – instead of hiding uncomfortable facts behind misleading graphs… 😦
